He usually comes the night of the 5th to the 6th of December - so you better clean your boots/shoes really well on the 5th before placing them in your window and Nikolo will leave some goodies in them if you've been a good girl. If you've been naughty however, you'll find some coal inside.

6th December is actually St. Nicholas day.

Here in Austria the day before Nikolo (as we call him) has someone who accompanies him or goes by himself already on the 5th of December: Krampus

St. Nicholas and Krampus bring presents for good children

He's the inspritation for Santa Claus silly! LOL Actually what they are refering to is St. Nicholas DAY. Each saint has a day in which they are honored and traditionally on ole St. Nicks children would leave out shoes for small presents or candy. Somehow that evolved into the Santa Claus tradition we have today. I dont really know how that came about. I think its a combination of American and German traditions and ideas and stories. Dont know for sure though. Does anyone else know how we got modern day Santa Claus out of St. Nicholas?

As far as I know the German and Dutch immigrants brought their St. Nicholas traditions to the United States which was to celebrate St. Nicholas Day on 6 December. Then with the help of the book 'A visit from St. Nicholas' his working day moved up to Christmas Eve and an advertisment by Coca-Cola where he is pictured in the red and white suit for the first time, changed his image forever.

Picture of Nikolo and Krampus - St. Nicholas reads from his golden book all the good and bad deeds of the child. If the child has been good it will receive a bag with goodies like chocolate, nuts, apples, oranges or tangerines, dates etc.

Kamilla and Nikolo (1999) - Nikolo is getting the bag for Kamilla out of his big sack - she has been a good girl:
